Special envoy of Pope Francis, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who is working on a mechanism for the return of children, will spend three days in the American capital. It is expected that he will meet with Biden at the White House today.

This was reported by Politico, according to LB.

The Holy See's press office stated that the mission of Cardinal Zuppi is to "promote peace in Ukraine." U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Joe Donnelly, is also in Washington and will be present at some of the Cardinal's meetings in the city.

In May, Pope Francis told journalists in Hungary that the Catholic Church will do everything in its power to help bring Ukrainian children back home.

Recall that on June 6, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi met with religious leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. The Pope's envoy delivered a letter from the Pontiff to Zelensky. During the meeting, the President emphasized that a ceasefire and freezing the conflict will not lead to establishing peace.

In Moscow, the cardinal met with one of President Vladimir Putin's advisers, Yuri Ushakov, and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Zuppi stated that his mission to Moscow was focused on humanitarian issues and did not involve any discussions about a peace plan regarding the war in Ukraine.
