President Petro Poroshenko expects the church hierarchs won’t delay the unification of the Council and the election of the primate of the independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which already will receive the Tomos of autocephaly, Ukrinform reports.

He is reported as saying this at an international conference “Lessons from the hybrid decade: what you need to know for a successful move forward,” according to Ukrinform.

"Once the Council is held, which, I hope, will not be delayed by the church hierarchy of Ukraine and the Ecumenical Patriarch, and the Primate of the Ukrainian Church is elected, the Church will receive the Tomos with confirmation of her spiritual independence,” Poroshenko said.

At the same time, the President assured that he personally and entire Ukraine share the principle of non-interference by the state, especially the foreign state, with the church activities.

Poroshenko also stressed that the rise in Ukraine of an independent Orthodox Church recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarch is comparable with the proclamation of state independence in 1991 and is a matter equal in importance to the visa-free regime, the association agreement with the European Union and a struggle for the NATO and the EU membership.
