The Ukrainian Cultural Center in Israel recently presented an evening dedicated to the memory of the prominent Ukrainian public and Church figure Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky (1865-1944).

Hennadiy Nadolenko, ambassador of Ukraine to Israel, noted that Sheptytsky “made an important contribution to establishing relations between the Ukrainian and Jewish peoples when he risked his life saving Jews during the second world war.”

Bishop Joseph Milian, the head of the Pastoral-Migration Department of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, spoke during the event, held in early April, about Sheptytsky’s life and activities, and his contacts with the Jewish people.

Afterwards, Bishop Joseph spoke specifically with Ukrainian Jewish Encounter about the purpose of his visit with a group of priests to Israel: “We came to visit our Greek-Catholic communities served by Father Patrick Sovyak. We prayed with parishioners. They also lectured at the Ukrainian Cultural Center about Sheptytsky, who personally saved Jews during the second world war.”

Seventy-two Greek-Catholic priests from the central regions of Ukraine accompanied the bishop. They prayed together and visited places related to Christianity.

According to Bishop Joseph, there are five Ukrainian Greek-Catholic communities in Israel – two in Jaffa, two in Haifa and one in Netanya. Ukrainian Greek-Catholics who live and work in Israel gather to pray at these communities. The bishop estimates that his parishioners number several thousand people.

The bishop pointed out, “Many have not yet found us. We have information that there are many believers in Israel who identify with the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. And we try to find them and provide spiritual care. Therefore, we want to send one or two of our priests to Israel, as it is difficult for [Father] Patrick to serve simultaneously in several distant cities.”

Bishop Joseph also emphasized that the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church has no problems with the state of Israel: “We have absolute acceptance and absolute support from the state. In Netanya, we have modest conditions for worship, so we are looking for a new and more comfortable room. And for this, of course, one has to go to the city hall to ask for a lease of another building.”

Bishop Joseph stated that he supports the intention of the NGO Israeli Friends of Ukraine to hold a seminar for Israeli youth in November-December of this year to discuss the personality and heroism of Metropolitan Andrey on the 75th anniversary of his death.

“This idea is very good. Ukraine has always been multinational and multi-confessional. There were several synagogues in Lviv, and Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky had a wonderful relationship with their leaders. The priests who worked with Sheptytsky told me that when he was passing through different towns, the Jews carried the scrolls of Torah and he kissed these scrolls. Sheptytsky was a man of ecumenical dialogue, which predated the decision of the Vatican Councils of the 1960s about such a dialogue,” underlined Bishop Joseph.

After the emergence of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church from the underground in the post-Soviet era, Joseph Milian was appointed to the parish of the village of Univ and the surrounding villages of the Zolochiv district. In June 1996 he received a master’s degree in theology. After 1997 he continued his studies in the doctoral work “The Christian Formation of the Laity in the Light of the Scriptures of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky.” On April 16, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI blessed the appointment of Hieromonk Joseph as the assistant bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church.
