    Fr. Stepan Sus appointed as Bishop of the Curia of the UGCC Supreme Archbishop

    Pope appoints auxiliary bishop for Mukachevo diocese of RCC

    Vatican Prefect visits Eastern-Rite Churches in United States

    Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, the Prefect for the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, was in the United States last month, visiting some of the numerous Eparchies (Dioceses) and Eastern Catholic Communities spread throughout the country. The first stage of Cardinal Sandri’s visit began in the city of Chicago, the seat of both a Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy and a Syro-Malabar Diocese. On Friday, the Prefect met with members of the Ukrainian Eparchy of St Nicholas of Chicago, including the Bishop, Venedykt Aleksiychuk. He also visited the Cathedral, as well as the parish of Sts Volodymyr and Olha.

    Vatican releases communiqué following meeting of Pope Francis with UGCC leaders

    On July 5-6, 2019, His Holiness Pope Francis met with the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Metropolitans, members of the Permanent Synod and heads of competent dicastries of the Roman Curia. As the communiqué notes, which was published by the Vatican press service, inviting the hierarchs of the UGCC to Rome, the Pope sought to express his closeness to the Greek Catholics.

    Tectonic Plates of Ecumenism Shifting Prompted by Tomos

    Rome. While Synod-2018 was trying to grasp the polyhedron-like character of “synodality” and wrestling with the differences among sexual inclination, sexual orientation, and sexual attraction, tectonic plates were shifting beneath the surface of world Christianity. Like similar shifts in geology, which can produce tsunamis and earthquakes, dramatic movement in the underlying structures of ecclesiastical life can lead to great historical consequences. The recent decision by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to grant autocephaly to a unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church—which would mean that church’s independence from the Russian Orthodox Moscow patriarchate—is precisely such a dramatic, tectonic shift, perhaps the greatest in Eastern Christianity since Constantinople and Rome formally severed full communion in 1054.

    On October 25, His Beatitude Sviatoslav's Book Tell Me the Truth. Dialogues About Sense of Life was presented in the Vatican, in the church of St. Lawrence. The book featuring the dialogue of the Primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church with a professor of the Pontifical Lateran University was published in Italian by the publishing house Cantagalli. The preface was written by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna.
