As reported by the press service of the foreign Ministry of Ukraine, the project aims to protect the constitutional rights of citizens of Ukraine on the territory temporarily occupied Ukrainian Peninsula.

The document condemned the massive human rights violations in the occupied Crimea and calls on Russia as the aggressor state to comply with its obligations under international law. The draft resolution also notes the necessity of releasing the illegally detained Russian citizens of Ukraine and cancellation of the decision to ban the activities of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.

The Ukrainian MP, Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev stressed that the situation with human rights on the Peninsula is deteriorating on a daily basis, the persecution intensified and any improvement is not expected as «occupation regimes can only stay on repression and terror.» The draft resolution just draws attention to the highlights violations of the rights of people who disagree and oppose Russian occupation.

«Of course, the document condemns the occupation, and we do not expect that after its adoption at the UN, Russia would withdraw its tanks and get out of our territory, but, nevertheless, the adoption of such a resolution is very important,» — said Dzhemilev.

President Petro Poroshenko expressed gratitude to Sweden, which is co-sponsor of the special resolution on the human rights violation in Crimea.

“I would like to express gratitude to Swedish partners and the Prime Minister of Sweden for our efficient cooperation within the UN. I would like to thank Sweden, which is a co-sponsor of this resolution together with Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko said at the joint press conference with Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Löfven.
