President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called on UN member states to recognize the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-1933 as an act of genocide, Radio Liberty reports.

“The UN has always played a leading role in ensuring that the crimes of the past are never repeated ... I urge all UN member states to adopt their own historic decision to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide," Poroshenko said at a debate on the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

He noted that the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly coincides with the 85th anniversary of “one of the deadliest crimes” of the 20th century - the Holodomor.

“It was an artificial famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933, organized by the totalitarian regime of Stalin, which led to the death toll of 7 to 10 million Ukrainians,” Poroshenko said.

In November 2006, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. At present, the Holodomor has been recognized the genocide by 24 countries of the world, and in a number of other countries, by the authorities of their separate local units.

Ukraine, referring to the data of the scientific-demographic examination, argues that the total death toll of the Holodomor of 1932-33 is almost 4 million people, and the losses of Ukrainians in among unborn are more than 6 million people.
