Jews tell about celebrating Shavuot under quarantine

On the eve of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, posts announcing registration for prayers appeared on the pages of synagogues in social networks. This is reported by TSN.

However, according to the Chief Rabbi of Kyiv, Jonathan Binyamin Markovych, we are not talking about opening synagogues. But there will be special holiday prayers for a limited number of people.

"We cannot and will not open synagogues, nor can we arrange great prayer services. We can't risk the lives and health of not only our community but the entire country and all the people of Kyiv," Markovych said, adding that prayers will be held in a ventilated room as well as in compliance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health.

According to the speaker of the Jewish community of Kyiv, Leonid Barats, you need to make an appointment over the phone in advance if you want to pray. Those who wish will be allowed to enter temporarily equipped prayer rooms for ten people at a time. Prayers, instead, will be repeated.

"Now we have temporarily equipped a prayer room in the business center so that people do not think that the synagogue is open and you can go. And we take all measures to eliminate the risk of infection. We put tables and chairs at a distance of more than two meters from each other," Barats said. He also stressed that it would be forbidden to enter the premises without a mask. Gloves are also desirable.

"If there are no masks, we will give our reusable ones specially made, but they may not be enough, and someone will be unhappy to go home without prayer," the Jewish community noted.

Those willing to pray are asked to greet one another without handshakes and hugs. Children under nine years of age, as well as adults over 70 years of age, are forbidden to come to prayer, as well as those who have symptoms of the virus: fever; dry cough; fatigue; pain, sore throat; diarrhea; conjunctivitis, headache, loss of smell and taste; skin rash or depigmentation of the nails on the hands and feet; difficulty breathing or shortness of breath; feeling of compression or chest pain.

"We make sure that believers do not touch any surfaces with their bare hands, and do not touch the face, mouth, nose and eyes with their hands. After each "shift" we carry out disinfection, and on each table, there will be sanitizers with antiseptic," Barats noted.

"There is nothing wrong with not coming to the synagogue this year. The Almighty will not consider you a bad person. Quite the contrary, it is the fulfillment of the commandment "and take extreme care to protect your souls," added Jonathan Binyamin Markovych.
