“It will be a powerful blow. First, the history of the Russian Church will have to begin not with the baptism of Rus, but from 1448. From the time when it was separated from the Kyiv Metropolis. And Moscow recognized it in 1948, when it celebrated the 500th anniversary of the autocephaly of the Russian Church. Thus, the history of the Russian Church will begin with the 15th century. This is the first point.

The second point is that Ukraine has never been and will never be part of Russia, since Rus had then existed as a State while Russia did not. And then, when the [their] State arose, it was called Muscovy, not Rus. And Rus was is Ukraine. Even the Crimea belonged to Rus, for Prince Volodymyr had defeated the Byzantine army in the Crimea. And once he won it – it means the Crimea became a part of Rus. The fact that the Russian Church will have to rewrite its history, and not only the Church history, but also Russia will have to rewrite its history – this fact is obvious. Therefore such a frenzied struggle is waged,” said Patriarch Filaret in an interview.
