The day before Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine suffered from internal bleeding.

On his Facebook page Archpriest George Kovalenko wrote:

“The condition of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr is sustainably grave since mid-December 2013. He is in the hospital in his residence at the Monastery of Theophany.

Unfortunately, his condition does not allow him to conduct worship services, but His Eminence regularly received the Holy Communion.

Last night, at the request of the person responsible for his treatment seven priests performed the sacrament of extreme unction for His Beatitude Volodymyr.

Simultaneously with the church prayer physicians held consultations. All that happened this Sunday evening attest that there are real problems and threats, but these problems and threats have arisen periodically for a long time, but the Church’s prayer and the professionalism of doctors have always brought relief.

During the prayer His Beatitude Volodymyr kept his eyes shut, but at the dismissal “Peace to all” he raised his hand for blessing, and made a sign of the cross, trying to say prayers. We are happy and it was amazing, because he is our spiritual father.

And against the background of recent developments and information provocations around the Church, we authoritatively and officially declare that Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine will be the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to the last moments of his life.

And it is not only the provision of our Statute, but also a strong conviction of our bishops, clergy and faithful who daily pray for their Primate.

We elected a Locum Tenens of the Church to address the daily matters of our Church. The Holy Synod, the bishops, clergy, governors and monastery superiors, parish assemblies are all in their places, bearing their obedience and performing their functions.

The unity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is a legacy of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr and we will keep and increase this gift to restore the unity of Ukrainian Orthodoxy.

P.S. Today His Beatitude received the bishops headed by the monastery superior, with whom he talked, he also greeted Metropolitan Onufriy on his heavenly patron’s day, the Orthodoxy and the World website reports.
