Ukraine marked the 30th anniversary of Armenian pogroms in Sumgait. On February 28, the Armenian churches of Ukraine held commemorative services for the victims.

In Kyiv, the Divine Liturgy took place in the Chapel of st. Naatakats, and the head of the Ukrainian diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Bishop Marcos Hovhannisyan presided at the prayer service.

Every year, in many regions of the country, the Armenian community hold various events (round tables, photo exhibitions, memorable nights, lectures, screenings of documentary films) devoted to the memory of the victims of the Sumgait tragedy.

The peak of violence against Armenians in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgait fell on February 26-29, 1988. During the pogroms, 32 were killed and hundreds of Armenians were wounded. 14,000 Armenians left the city within a few days.
