YUNESCO is dissatisfied with the development near the Kyiv Cave Monastery and Sophia of Kyiv. Further development of the adjacent buffer zones can lead to the exclusion of the monuments from the list of the objects of the world heritage.

The 36th session of the Committee of the World Heritage of YUNESCO was held in Saints Petersburg on 24 June-6 July. According to Коммеrsant.ua, the delegations of participant countries reported on the preservation of the monuments of the World Heritage of YUNESCO. The full list includes 962 objects.

YUNESCO is dissatisfied with the development near the Kyiv Cave Monastery and Sophia of Kyiv. Further development of the adjacent buffer zones can lead to the exclusion of the monuments from the list of the objects of the world heritage.

Representatives of the Committee noted that despite the numerous requests of YUNESCO to impose a moratorium on development of the buffer zone, the construction of multi-storied buildings continues.

“Three multi-storied buildings, which are being built in the Pechersk District on the banks of the Dnieper, upset the architectural and historic landscape of the capital and are located within the protected reserve zone. Continuation of the construction threatens the integrity of the object of the world heritage,” reads the draft decision of the committee. The document stresses that the Ukrainian side failed to submit to YUNESCO the requested detailed information regarding the mentioned buildings and permitted the construction of yet another object in the buffer zone.

“It is about the construction of a multi-storied elite dwelling complex near the walls of the Sophia. The construction of the two-layer underground parking led to the rise of the subterranean waters which directly threatens the historic monuments,” reported the active member of the public movement “Preserve Old Kyiv,” Iryna Nikiforova who attended the meeting.
