Archaeologists discovered Jewish apartments of XVIII century near synagogue of Zhovkva

The most interesting excavated rarity is the 400-year-old defensive wall of the town and the well of that time.

In Zhovkva of Lviv region, the experts of “Archaeological Rescue Service” excavated the town’sdefensive wall and the road, which are 400 years old, and even an apartment of XVIII century, ZAXID.net reports.

Right next to the synagogue in the center of Zhovkva archaeologists excavate Jewish quarter, which was finally leveled with the ground during the Second World War.

“This part of town was once the center of the town, which was protected from the north side of the town’s defensive wall. Now there is a need to conduct archaeological research, the largest in the downtown of the past 15 years,” said archaeologists of the State Historical and Architectural Reserve in Zhovkva Taras Ivanyshyn.

The most interesting excavated rarity is the 400-year-old defensive wall of the town and the well of that time.

 A residential house XVIII century was also excavated.

“At that time almost all the apartments were wooden and were destroyed mostly by fire. We came across a house that burned down, because they saw a burned tree,” archaeologist Taras Panchyshyn said.

Archaeologists showed another landmark- the of road XVII century. 400 years ago the then “Schumachers” could hardly dash about hard wood flooring.

“The road was paved with pine and birch wand, it was covered with sawdust and was leveled all the time. And next we found a wooden water pipe, which is still operating,”Taras Panchyshyn said.

The fact that this quarter inhabited by Jews, is proven by dozens of findings.

Archaeologist Taras Ivanyshyn draws from the package the artifacts just dug from the earth - ceramics, glassware, pipe, “We came across a ceramic pipe, which has a mark the Star of David. There are also beautiful flower-shaped flowercups, ritual Hanukkah candles late XIX - early XX century.”

The archaeologists promise to exhibit all artifacts in Zhovkva castle.
