Ukrainain Orthodoxy on the eve of Pan-Orthodox Council. Part III
The history evidences: the Local Churches that were historically associated with earthly empires were uninterested in the canonical establishment of local churches under their jurisdictions, and therefore usually granted autocephaly to churches only under the pressure of historic circumstances. No exception is the Moscow Patriarchate, which has incorporated the Orthodox Church in Ukraine since 1686.

Ukrainian Orthodoxy: path to recovery of Church unity. Part II
Ukrainian Orthodoxy and Ukrainian society suffer from division. The majority of Ukrainian Orthodox believers belong to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. The rest of the Orthodox community of Ukraine has chosen a different path of self-proclaimed autocephaly. However, neither the first nor the second path is optimal for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine to date.

Synod of the UOC-KP determines probable subjects of negotiations with the Russian Orthodox Church
The Synod of the UOC-KP, held on December 13 in Kyiv, heard the message of Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Russia-Ukraine about the establishment of the Russian-Orthodox Church Commission for Dialogue - in response to the appeal of Patriarch Filaret to the Primate and the Episcopate of the Russian Orthodox Church of November 16, 2017.
The Synod has decided:
1. To support and approve the position of Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Russia-Ukraine about the necessity of dialogue with the Russian Orthodox Church to achieve reconciliation between the Ukrainian and Russian Churches, the restoration of prayer and Eucharistic communication as should exist between the Local Orthodox Churches and about recognition of the autocephalous local Orthodox Church in Ukraine – the Kyivan Patriarchate – by the Russian Orthodox Church.
2. Taking into account that previously the Russian Orthodox Church was refusing to maintain a dialogue with the Kyiv Patriarchate, and now has set up a commission for dialogue, to agree to conduct the dialogue with the Russian Orthodox Church.
The purpose of the dialogue is:
- elimination by the Moscow Patriarchate of all obstacles that currently prevent the Orthodox bishops, clergymen and faithful who live in Ukraine and recognize the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate, to end the church separation and unite with the UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate into a single Local Ukrainian Orthodox Church;
- the restoration by the Moscow Patriarchate of the prayer and Eucharistic communion with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate, broken on its initiative, since such communion should exist between the Local Orthodox Churches;
- recognition by the Moscow Patriarchate, as one of the Local Autocephalous Orthodox Churches, of autocephaly of the Kyiv Patriarchate, as the Local Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The Synod also decided that, from the canonical and pastoral reasons, the UOC of the Kyivan Patriarchate will not become in any form a part of the administrative structure of the Moscow Patriarchate is impossible and not a subject of dialogue.

The publicly stated and symbolic reason for this "dialogue" between the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarchate) and the Russian Orthodox Church involves a reunified Orthodox Church in Ukraine but both Churches have a diametrically opposite view in the matter of control. In fact, considering the extremely poor state of relations between Russia and Ukraine which have also been reflected in the major differences between the National Orthodox Churches in both countries with the partial exception of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), what positive results could possibly be attained through current "dialogue"? Moreover, would either Church capitulate (surrender) to the other in order to achieve a resolution to their differences? That would be absurd. So, what would be the purpose of negotiations if reunification in the current context would not be a realistic outcome? While there are a number of possibilities, the actual reasons would not necessarily be the same between the two Churches involved. In that regard, the ROC might seek assurances from the UOC(KP) that the Ukrainian Church cease and desist in its acceptance of parishes from the UOC(MP) that express a desire to defect to to the UOC(KP). After all, this situation has occurred with ever increasing frequency and as such has seriously undermined the position of the ROC in Ukraine. As for the UOC(KP), their possible angle could include a desire for greater international recognition (via its negotiations with the ROC) as a legitimate National Church of Ukraine. In any case time will tell but it could also be said that time is not on the side of the Russian Orthodox Church or its Puppet Church, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate). Why? Russia's aggression against Ukraine which has been supported by the ROC Patriarch Kirill has not only unified all Ukrainian citizens as never before in their sense of patriotism for Ukraine but it has also dramatically increased Ukraine's alienation from the Moscow Patriarchate. As such, both Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill could ironically be said to have at least taken partial credit for an independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church as well as an independent Ukrainian nation.
Naive Filaret!
