Secretariat of Council of Churches Prepares Proposals on Development of Church-State Relations

The Secretariat of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO) analyzed urgent questions of state-confessional relations.

The Secretariat of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO) analyzed urgent questions of church-state relations.

The meeting of the representatives of the confessions was held on September 4, 2012, in Kyiv under the headship of Mitred Protopriest Oleksa Petriv of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in order to prepare a session of the council with the participation of the heads of churches and religious organizations, reported the Institute for Religious Freedom.

The director of the Department on Religions and Nationalities of the Ministry of Culture, Volodymyr Lubchyk, told the audience about the work to restore the activity of the Committee on Ensuring Rights of Religious Organizations of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.  

He said that its session would be held on September 6 and that a work team would be set up within its framework consisting of state officials and reps of confessions to make the work more effective.

Lubchyk submitted to the consideration of the council a proposal to include in its composition the first deputy Minister of Culture Yurii Bohutskyi and to locate the Secretariat of the Council in one of the buildings of the Ministry of Culture.

Among other issues, the participants paid attention to the problems of orphans in Ukraine.                                                                                                

The reps of churches and religious organizations also supported again the activity of the National Expert Committee on Protection of Social Morality.

According to the head of the committee, Vasyl Kostytskyi, the question of the liquidation of the committee in the government’s Bill 10447 is to be considered by the Parliament this week. 

In addition, the Secretariat of the AUCCRO discussed organizational questions of the planned trip of its delegation to Brussels to meet with the leadership of the European Union.

In the end, the participants defined the agenda of the next meeting to be held in October.
