Residents Protest Near Lviv Council Against Construction Near St. George's Cathedral
Fifteen people with banners have participated in a protest near the Lviv City Council against the construction of a residential and office center near the St. George's Cathedral at 4a Ozarkevycha Street.
These are residents of the adjacent areas who are convinced that as the result of the construction, gardens will be cut at Sheptytskyh Street, the heavy machinery will harm the buildings and the residents will not be able to see the sun or the church because of the buildings to be constructed. The residents are also concerned about the preservation of the Sheptytskyi Hospital, which is adjacent to the construction site.
The residents submitted an address in this regard to the Lviv City Council deputies who are to consider today the question of the approval of the development project regarding the allocation of the mentioned land plot for construction.
As RISU reported earlier, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is not against the construction, as stated in an official letter from the head of the Lviv Archeparchy of UGCC, Bishop Ihor Voznyak. However, the site is a buffer zone of the UNESCO monument.
On May 28, in a commentary to ZІК, the administrator of the Curia of Lviv Archeparchy of UGCC, Fr. Volodymyr Onyskiv, explained that the Curia does not oppose the construction because it signed with the developer, Real Estate Development Ltd, an agreement of cooperation regarding the construction and the developer offered the church a share of the facilities to be used for church needs.
