Over 54% of Ukrainians positive about idea of creating single local church - poll

The idea of creating a single local church in Ukraine is positively assessed by more than 54% of Ukrainians, according to the results of a poll conducted by the Rating sociological group.

The survey shows that 54% of respondents are positive about the idea of creating a single local church in Ukraine, 19% hold the opposite view, and 19% are indifferent about it. 

The highest level of support for the idea of a single local church was recorded in the west (68%) and in the center (58%). At the same time, this initiative is supported by 45% in the south and 37% in the east.

The high level of support for the local church is among the oldest respondents (61%). Among young people this idea is backed by 45% and among middle-aged people by 51%.

In the context of denominations, the greatest support for the initiative on autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine was recorded among the faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate. In general, here the level of support for the idea of a single local church amounts to over 75%. The percentage of such people among the faithful of other denominations is about 50%. The percentage of those who consider themselves believers but do not refer them to any denomination is 43%, and non-believers - 29%. The greatest number of opponents of the idea of the local church is among the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, as over 50% of its parishioners have a negative attitude to this. Despite this, almost a third of them (28%) favorably regard autocephaly.

About 36% of all respondents believe that the creation of a single local church will unite the country faster, and 23% say that this initiative will in no way influence the consolidation of society. At the same time, 24% talk about a possible split. The greatest number of those talking about the split after autocephaly is received is in the east (34%) and among the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (57%). 

The survey was conducted from September 27 to October 4, 2018, and interviewed 2,000 respondents. The poll's margin of error does not exceed 2.2%.
