During a meeting between the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Patriarch Sviatoslav, and top officials of the US Embassy on November 10, the participants touched upon the subject of the parliamentary elections in Ukraine, including the use of priests.

According to the Information Department of the UGCC, Patriarch Sviatoslav stated that the church, which kept its distance from the political battles, is concerned over efforts of various candidates to use the authority of the church for political purposes.

Patriarch Sviatoslav said: “We had to deal with large-scale political bribery, including that of priests.” He also noted that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is conducting an internal investigation of abuses during the elections and will make appropriate conclusions.

The meeting was attended by US Ambassador to Ukraine John Teft, representative of the US State Department Justin Sosne, political counselor of the Embassy of U.S. in Ukraine Elizabeth Zentos and other officials.
