Special US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, Samuel Brownback, assured the Ukrainian delegation of his support of the right of believers living in the occupied territories of Ukraine to freely confess their beliefs and convictions.

Agreements on cooperation in this area were reached within the framework of the visit of Ukrainian parliamentarians to Washington. Part of it was a meeting between the head of the Ukrainian delegation, MP Pavlo Unhurian and Ambassador Samuel Brownback, the Institute of Religious Freedom reports.Brownback-Samuel-1-USAw.jpg

The participants of the meeting discussed the painful issues of persecution of Ukrainians in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions because of their pro-Ukrainian attitude and religious convictions.

This is especially true of evangelical Christians, Orthodox of the Kyiv Patriarchate, Greek Catholics, and Crimean Tatars, especially in occupied Crimea.

During the meeting, Ambassador Brownback was given an analytical report on religious persecution in the occupied territories of Eastern Ukraine, prepared by the Institute of Religious Freedom.

Also during the meeting, Unhuryan and Brownback agreed on a series of concrete steps to protect the Ukrainians affected by Russian aggression, including assistance in seeking missing citizens of Ukraine.

In its annual report, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) stated that Russia was responsible for religious crimes in Donbas and Crimea because of its actual control of these occupied territories.
