Orthodoxy and Protestantism are the most widespread confessions in Ukrain

The number of religious organizations on the basis of confession indicates that Christianity remains dominant religion in Ukraine. In addition to that, Orthodoxy and Protestantism are the most widespread confessions among all Christian confessions.

One can draw such conclusion from the State Committee of Ukraine on Nationalities and Religions statistical data, as of the beginning of 2011, about the network of churches and religious organizations in Ukraine, reports the Institute for Religious Freedom.

The number of religious organizations on the basis of confession indicates that Christianity remains dominant religion in Ukraine. In addition to that, Orthodoxy and Protestantism are the most widespread confessions among all Christian confessions.

Orthodoxy is the most widespread denomination in Ukraine and presented with 18361 religious organizations (which is +387 organizations more than last year), which is 51,2% of the total network of religious organizations in Ukraine.

In spite of considerable increase of orthodox communities for a twelvemonth, at the same time there is a decrease in their specific part in the religious network of Ukraine (-0,6%) by reason of increase in the number of communities of other confessions.

The Protestant churches in Ukraine are represented with 10411 religious organizations (+226), which is 29% of the total number – a little more than last year. 

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is the most numerous in a quantity of religious organizations (together with Moscow Patriarchate), that numbers 12342 religious organizations (communities, eparchies, monasteries, brotherhoods, missions, religious educational institutions, etc.). There are 12043 communities in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is 67,4 % of all orthodox communities in Ukraine (like last year).

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate is presented with 4538 religious organizations. It unites 4401 religious communities (+120), that is 24,6 % of all orthodox communities in Ukraine (+0,15%).

In its turn, the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church numbers 1227 religious organizations and 1190 communities among them (-7).

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church numbers 3825 religious organizations including 3647 communities (+48). TheRoman Catholic Church in Ukraine is presented with 1086 religious organizations including 1004 communities (+5).

Among the Protestant churches the All-Ukrainian Union of Associations of Evangelical Christians Baptists is the most numerous – 2735 religious organizations with 2569 church communities among them (+6). 

The next is the All-Ukrainian Union of Pentecostal Churches of Evangelical Faith, that consists of 1711 religious organizations including 1612 communities (+19). The less numerous is the Seventh-day Adventist Church numbers 1074 religious organizations with 1056 communities among them (+4).

There are 303 Judaic religious organizations including 276 communities (+6) in Ukraine.

Islam in Ukraine is presented with number of religious centers. The total number of Islamic religious organization is 1208 with 1193 religious communities among them (+19). The biggest number of Islamic communities is in Crimea, Kherson and Donetsk.

There are other confessions in Ukraine, but with a small number. To date is also registered 12 interdenominational organizations.

According to IRF reports, the State Committee on Nationalities and Religions prepared annual statistics reports reflecting annual indicators of religious activity development in Ukraine.
