On Jan. 14-15 Ukrainian historians will meet to discuss a new history textbook. The meeting is organized by the New Time Association of Teachers and the Petro Jacyk program for studying contemporary Ukraine and will be held at the Lviv-based Ukrainian Catholic University.

The agenda includes two related issues: a new history textbook and a new view on the history of Ukraine. Important is that the meeting will involve two groups of historians, researchers and school teachers.

“Experts will discuss the draft of a new textbook on history prepared by the New Time Association with financial support from the Council of Europe. The textbook is based on the multiethnic vision of Ukrainian history,” UCU history Professor Yaroslav Hrytsak says.

Another important issue to be discussed at the meeting will deal with a new look on the history of Ukraine, a look which, as opposed to the look espoused in the past and by the current regime, will lead to reconciliation, not to confrontation, in Ukraine.

“The stand-off around Ukraine’s history makes a compromise impossible and stalls political and economic reform. The regime cannot have a monopoly on historical memory. Initiatives challenging such monopolization and emanating from the grass roots are required,” Hrytsak added.
