Pre-Easter fundraising for children with cancer started in Sumy region
On the first day of Lent, March 14, the sixth charity event “Gracious deeds tograciousday” started.The action will continue until May 3, when all funds collected will be counted and conveyed to hematology and oncology department of Sumy Regional Children's Hospital.
The organizers, Sumy Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) and Sumy regional state broadcasting company, rely on the generosity of Sumy citizens. The funds are collected in sealed boxes in churches of the UOC (MP) of the region, and through a special account in PAB “Ukrsotsbank.”
In 2015, the incidence of cancer among children increased dramatically in Sumy, the medical professionals record incidents that are not typical of childhood. However, the irregular state funding did not allow procuring medicines in time.
The money collected during last year's activities, which is more than UAH 533 thousand, were spent for medicines, which by the time were required the most by patients of oncology department.
Since the beginning of 2016 no drugs for children with cancer were purchased for public funds. Therefore, there is a serious need to form a stock of the most essential medicines to timely help children with cancer and this is the main goal of this year’s action “Gracious deeds to gracious day.”
Today in Sumy 146 children were diagnosed with cancer. In the hematology department 22 patients now undergo treatment. These children spend 6 to 12 months in hospital. Treatment of one child costs an average of 80-100 thousand dollars. Cancer rating in the region is 40% higher than the average in Ukraine. The percentage of recovery becomes more encouragingfrom year to year, for certain types of tumors it is 83%.
