Pope appoints auxiliary bishop for Mukachevo diocese of RCC

On Monday, November 11, the Vatican officials announced that Pope Francis had appointed Fr Mykola Petro Luchko, Order of Preachers, Abbot of the Dominican community in Lviv, as auxiliary Bishop of Mukachevo Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, granting him the titular court of Giru-Martselli.

On Monday, November 11, the Vatican officials announced that Pope Francis had appointed Fr Mykola Petro Luchko, Order of Preachers, Abbot of the Dominican community in Lviv, as auxiliary Bishop of Mukachevo Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, granting him the titular court of Giru-Martselli.

The Bishop nominee was born on March 26, 1974, in Mukachevo. In 1994 he joined the Order of Preachers, in which he took eternal vows in 2000. He received his theological education at the Dominican College of philosophy and theology in Krakow, Poland. After the Presbyterian ordinations performed on June 24, 2003, Fr Mykola performed pastoral care of the faithful in Yalta, St. Petersburg, Chortkov, Lviv and Khmelnitsky.

In July 2018, he became rector of the community in Lviv. He speaks Ukrainian, Hungarian, Slovak, Russian, Polish and English.

Mukachevo Roman Catholic Diocese is part of the Lviv Metropolis of the Latin rite and covers parishes and entities in the Transcarpathian region. St. John Paul II in 1993 established the Apostolic Administration of Transcarpathians and appointed the then Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Antonio Franco as its Apostolic Administrator. He was succeeded in 1997 by Bishop antal Mainek, who was appointed auxiliary Bishop at the end of 1995.

After St. John Paul II created the Mukachevo diocese on March 27, 2002, Bishop Antal became its first ordinary and still leads It.

The Cathedral of St. Martin is located in Mukachevo. It was on the day of the liturgical remembrance of the patron of the diocese that the appointment of the auxiliary Bishop was announced.
