Title of the Righteous to be conferred on Sheptytsky by Association for the Garden of the Righteous of Milan

On the initiative of His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Head of the UGCC, the Association of the Garden of the Righteous - Gariwo of Milan, accepted the nomination of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky for the title of Righteous and decided to place his name for his services to Humanity in the Virtual Garden of the Righteous.

The Garden of the Righteous - Gariwo has been operating in Milan since 1999 and has been conferring the title of Righteous on people who, during various genocides, have shown moral resilience and humanity in the salvation of persons of another nationality, risking their own lives. At Gariwo's initiative, memorial gardens have been set up in different countries around the world to plant trees in honor of the Righteous of mankind; a number of legislative initiatives have been carried out at European Union level, in particular on the establishment of the Day of the Righteous; many educational projects have been implemented to promote the example of the Righteous in preventing the atrocities of the past in our time. The president of the association is Gabriel Nissim, a renowned historian and author of many books on genocide and heroic histories of individuals who have shown moral resistance to totalitarian regimes.

The ceremony of conferment of the title of the Righteous on Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky will take place on March 10, at 3:00 pm, at the Milan City Hall. In addition to this event, the program of the visit of the Head of the UGCC to Milan includes:

March 8, 1:00 pm - Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of Milan
