Kyiv— Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), is to attend a gathering of the heads of Orthodox churches to be held in Istanbul from 11 to 12 October 2008. orthodoxy.org.ua posted the news on 9 October 2008.
“The main goal of this forum is to demonstrate the unity of the Orthodox world through the prayerful and eucharistic communion of the heads of all the canonical national Orthodox churches.” So said Archimandrite Kyryl (Hovorun), head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Holy Synod of the UOC-MP.
Metropolitan Volodymyr’s visit to Istanbul was agreed upon both by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople and Patriarch Alexis II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The head of the UOC-MP previously took part in a similar meeting of Orthodox leaders on Christmas 2000 in Bethlehem.
“The participation of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr in a meeting with the church heads in Constantinople should be yet another step on the path to uniting divided Ukrainian Orthodoxy. For this will allow him to act as a guarantee of the support of the whole Orthodox world for carrying out the initiatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [UOC-MP] as to overcoming the church schism that exists in Ukraine.” So said Archimandrite Kyryl.
