In Lviv, on June 26, close to 40 thousand faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) attended a Divine Liturgy marking the 10th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

Greek Catholic youth in Kyiv to stage flash mob dedicated to Pope John Paul II
On June 25, a flash mob “The Pope, Ukraine, and I” will be staged on Independence Square in Kyiv. The event will be dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine.

Moscow voiced its categorical protests, the Orthodox hierarchy in Kyiv advised against it, and the Roman Curia and the entire Catholic world warned against “unwisely upsetting Moscow.” One had to be very strong to go against this critical “Gulf Stream.”

Less than half of the press service for the visit of His Holiness John Paul ІІ to Ukraine in 2001, working in Lviv, were professional journalists. Meanwhile their word was highly praised by foreign journalists who had covered many apostolic visits. Creation and maintenance of the official visit’s website was supervised by Ihor BALYNSKYI, political scientist, head of the Journalism Department of the Humanities Faculty at UCU, Docent of the Journalism Faculty at the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv.
