Renowned Ukrainian Canadian historian Orest Subtelny dies

Subtelny known for his historiography book "Ukraine: A History", which impacted the growth of Ukrainian national self-consciousness, Ukraine Today informs.

 Canadian historian of Ukrainian descent Orest Subtelny died in Canada on July 24, 2016.

His funeral service would be held on Thursday, July 28, and a day later he would be buried in Toronto, Ukrainian news agency Hromadske reported.

Subtelny's death triggered emotional response in Ukraine. President Poroshenko expressed his condolences to the historian's relatives.

"You have my deepest condolences regarding the aching void that was left after Orest Subtelny passed away. His contribution to the Ukraine's history is priceless", Poroshenko said.

Subtelny was born on May 7, 1941 in Krakow, Poland. He graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1965 and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1973.

In 1982 he became a professor in the History and Political science department in York University in Toronto.

Subtelny is known for his historiography book "Ukraine: A History", which was published in 1988 by the York University. It was acknowledged as one of the most important and influential book the institution had ever published.

The book is considered to have greatly impacted the growth of Ukrainian national consciousness and identity.
