72% of Ukrainians agree with the view that the Holodomor of 1932-33 was a genocide of the Ukrainian people, while 14% do not agree and 14% are undecided. These are the results of a survey conducted by the sociological group “Rating” in September 2016.

Despite the fact that the number of people thinking the Holodomor to be genocide has, slightly decreased compared to the past year (from 80% to 72%), while it is the same as in 2014 and is higher than it was in 2010-2012 (about 60%).

The view that the Holodomor of 1932-33 was genocide of the Ukrainian people is held by almost all residents of western Ukraine (97%), the majority in central Ukraine (78%), almost two-thirds of population in southern Ukraine (57%) and less than a half of the population in eastern Ukraine (48%).

Villagers tend more to agree with the view the Holodomor was a genocide than the residents of the cities (79% vs. 68%).

Among respondents whose native language is Ukrainian, the supporters of this view account for 83%, while among those who consider Russian their mother tongue the supporters account for 47%.

In terms of age groups, the number of people holding the view that the Holodomor was genocide ranges from 70 to 75% in different age categories. However, the difference is observed in the number of opponents of this view in different age groups: the older the respondents, the more of them hold opposing views.

Among the supporters of the European integration, those who agree that the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was genocide are 86%, among the opponents they are nearly a half - 48%. A similar trend is observed among those who are in favor or against joining NATO (91% vs. 53%). Instead, respondents supporting accession to the Customs Union are less likely to recognize the Holodomor as genocide (among them only 38% think so).

It is interesting that the nostalgic sentiment for the Soviet Union has decisive impact on the attitudes of respondents who think the Holodomor was genocide. Thus, 59% of those who deplore the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 still agree that the Holodomor was genocide (25% of them agree). Among those who have no regrets they are 85%.

The poll audience is the Ukrainian people of 18 years and older. The sample is representative by age, gender, region and type of settlement. Sample size: 2,000 respondents. Personal formalized interview (face-to-face). Coverage error: 2.2%. Dates: September 16-22, 2016. Based on Glavkom news.
