Святослав_(Шевчук).jpgPatriarch Sviatoslav, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, urged the international community to follow the events currently taking place in Ukraine, stressing that “the danger has not passed.” He said this in Rome during a press conference for representatives of the Italian and international media.

“In some regions of Ukraine there are separatist calls to encroach on the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Europe must not isolate itself from these problems, because sooner or later they will affect every European,” said the head of the church.

When asked by the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero about Russia's role in exacerbating the situation in Ukraine, the patriarch said that “we have received some warning signs from the Russian government, and we are wary; however, the appeal of the State Duma on respect for territorial integrity in Ukraine, as well as other statements made in the past, gives us reason to hope that neither Russia nor any other country will not allow itself to encroach on the sovereignty of the Ukrainian state.”

The patriarch is convinced that there is no reason to expect a civil war in Ukraine: “We are different, but we are not divided. Politicians try to create divisions between Ukrainians for their political goals. The Maidan proved that Ukrainians make up one people and that they are united in their desire to live in a peaceful country,” the Information Department of the UGCC reported.
