Parliament guarantees rights of Crimean Tatar people as part of Ukrainian state

Ukraine’s Parliament guarantees rights of the Crimean Tatar people as part of the Ukrainian state; a total of 283 MPs out of the 309 registered in the session hall voted for a respective statement on Thursday.

"Ukraine guarantees the preservation and development of ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious identity of the Crimean Tatar people as an indigenous people and all national minorities in Ukraine," reads the document.

The Verkhovna Rada also expressed its support for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The parliament instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to urgently develop draft laws and regulatory acts of Ukraine that define and secure the status of the Crimean Tatar people as an indigenous people of Ukraine. 

"Ukraine strongly condemns any attempts to restrict political and social rights, civil liberties of citizens of Ukraine who live in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea," reads the statement. The resolution enters into force on the day of its adoption.
