“Metropolitan Sheptytskyy: 1923-1939. Testing ideals” to be presented in Kyiv

A book by Lviv historian LilianaHentoshtitled “Metropolitan Sheptytskyy: 1923-1939. Testing ideals" will be presented on October 30 in Kyiv, at 17:00 in the main (red) building of yivTaras Shevchenko National University, History Department. The event will take place within the international conference dedicated to the 150thanniversary of Andrey Sheptytskyy.

The book is an attempt to write amodernbiography of Metropolitan of the Greek Catholic Church Andrey Sheptytskyy (1865-1944), including the coverage of his life and work in the period from 1923 to 1939. The interwar period is the key to understanding the Metropolitan’s legacy, asat this time was the acme of his activity in all sectors, and the plans to reform the GCC and vision of ecumenical dialogue with the Orthodox world had been fully shaped. The author tried to cover the most important aspects of this activity: the Church, society, culture and education. The issues such as the Metropolitan’s attitude towards the State as such and his views on Fascism and Communism were not overlooked. An important theme is the attitude of Andrey Sheptytskyy to the spread of integral nationalismand to the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. In the key section of the book, the author analyzesthe Metropolitan’s views on modernity, modernization and his plans of changes and reforms in the GCC, the essence of which wasByzantinization and Ukrainization.

LilianaHentosh is PhD in history, majoring in world history, researcher of the Institute of Historical Research at Lviv National Ivan Franko University, author of the monograph “The Vatican and the challenges of modernity. Eastern European politics of Pope Benedict XV and Ukrainian-Polish conflict in Galicia (1914-1923),” of a number of scientific articles on the history of Catholic and Greek Catholic churches, interethnic and interfaith relations. For many years she has been studying the Ukrainian, Polish and Vatican archival collections, the findings of her research were published in Ukrainian, Polish, German and English. It was reported by the Information Department of the UGCC.
