Тернопіль_1.jpegA house for lonely and needy is being constructed in Ternopil by the Eastern rite Franciscans. A brick building has been already built. Now they are constructing the roof, and the monks will be grateful to all who are willing to become a sponsor.

St. Anthony Social House will appear on Volodymyr the Great’s street, near the Church of St Peter, where the Greek Catholic Franciscans serve.

“It will be a refuge for the poor, a kitchen for them. Franciscan nuns will service the institution. Their monastery will operate on one of the floors. Total building area is 1000 square meters,” rector of Franciscan monastery in Ternopil Fr. Justinian Horodechnyy told RISU reporter Volodymyr Moroz. “ It is difficult to talk about the time of completion in the current realities of crisis and inflation, because everything depends on finances. We are in need of materials for roof, wood, sheet, fasteners, water pipes.”

Social House in Ternopil is the unfinished long-term construction which started about 10 years ago and was called “St. Anthony House.” After a pause, the construction work resumed in November 2015. Considerable support was provided by charitable fund “Franciscans in Central and Eastern Europe.” According to the original plan, it was to be a refuge for children.

"But the fact is that when it comes to children, they cannot stay out of the house around the clock. We would like to see it was not a one-day shelter,” Yu Horodechnyy continues. “There are lonely elderly. Those who do not have family, are accepted in public geriatric homes. However, those who have families, but their families do not take care of them - they have a lot to pay for such care. We are striving to help them.”

Given the social category, a home for the lonely and homeless is equipped with all necessary equipment, including elevators and ramps.

The house can host simultaneously 15 people who need help.

By the way, the author of the social house project is architect Sergei Gora from Ternopil, who also designed the Church of St. Peter. A kitchen for the needy which is to be arranged in the house has for many years been operating at the monastery - it just will transfer to a new location. This kitchen serves daily hot meals to 30 people.
