Poll on Possible Doomsday Conducted

86.9% of Ukrainians do not believe the end of the world will happen on 21 December, 2012 according to the results of a poll.

Аccording to the results of a poll conducted by the Social Monitoring Center and O. Yaremenko Ukrainian Institute of Social Studies, which were passed on to UNIAN, 86.9% of Ukrainians do not believe the end of the world will happen on December 21, 2012,

According to the poll, 64.5% are convinced that no catastrophe is to happen on December 21, 22.5% have some doubts but believe that nothing bad is to happen on the global scale.

Of the people polled, 7.3% expect the end of the world of which 5.9% chose the option “probably yes” and 1.9% are sure it will happen.

Residents of northern and eastern Ukraine are most concerned about the end of the world. The largest number of people who believe in the significance of December 21 were registered in these regions and also in Kyiv.

The most reluctant or doubtful to respond are the residents of the Crimea. The older the respondents the more they are inclined to believe in the end of the world. Among the younger generation, 4.6% answered yes whereas among the older generation, 10.5% gave a positive response. Also, women (9.7%) are more inclined to believe in a coming doomsday than men (4.4%).

Respondents with the highest level of education tend to be the greatest skeptics in this regard.

The responses did not depend on the religiosity of the respondents. Of nonbeliever 6% at least partly believe in the end of the world and 7% of people who introduced themselves as believers belonging to certain denominations also believe in it.
