In Kyiv the UOC (MP) undertook to restore the military hospital – a building erected in the 1930s. In August this building was repaired by volunteers, benefactors, and nurses, using their own resources, and in September local clergymen joined in.

According to Archbishop Luka (Kovalenko) of the UOC-MP Eparchy of Zaporizhzhia, the idea to help restore the hospital came after one of the planned diocesan meetings.

“During the meeting our clergymen came to me with a request to find a way to offer practical assitance to the servicemen who suffered in the military confrontation. Medical workers take an oath in which they swear to make every effort for a patient’s benefit. Their oath is based on the principle of compassion and care for the benefit of the patient, his dominant interest. Just the same, the clergymen are guided in their actions by the principle of compassion and concern for all ‘laborers and loaded down with burdens’. So we decided to contribute,” said the hierarch.

The Archbishop also said that UOC (MP) Primate Onufriy (Berezovsky) urged the bishops to send volunteers from their eparchies to restore the Zaporizhzhia hospital. The first to respond were the clergymen of Volyn and Transcarpathia.

In compliance with the order of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the military hospital will accept the injured from the ATO zone already on 1 November 2014. But the state has no funds for this renovation. According to the website of the UOC (MP) Eparchy of Zaporizhzhia, the benefactors volunteered to help restore the hospital, while the eparchy purchased materials at its own expense. Construction workers from Kyiv, Volyn, and Transcarpathia are expected to join in soon. The cost of their accommodation, food and even charity concerts will be incurred by the eparchy of Zaporizhzhia of the UOC (MP).
