UGCC Primate urges the faithful to renew their baptismal vows on the Day of remembrance of St Volodymyr

I urge everyone to come this week, especially on July 28, the day of St. Prince Volodymyr, to our churches and by tradition to renew the vows we gave by the mouths of our godparents on the day of our Baptism.

Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Patriarch Sviatoslav was reported as saying this during the Liturgy on July 24 in the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection.

The hierarch said that every year when we celebrate the memory of Princess Olga and Prince Volodymyr, we always renew our baptismal vows.

“When asked whether you renounce Satan and all his angels, and all its service, and all of his strength, we are invited to say together with our Saints - Princess Olha and Prince Volodymyr:  “yes, I do.” When asked whether you unite with Christ and promise to serve Him, we are invited to say, yes, I have reunited with Christ and am ready to serve him,” said the Patriarch.

"Then we see, continued the patriarch, that the basis, the underlying foundation of the battle, which today Ukrainian people fight, is nothing but a profound struggle between good and evil. To have the strength to survive and win, to prevent the evil seize our land, we must draw strength from our baptism. And then the grace of God will be our victory over evil in the personal life and in our present historical moment.”

The rite of renewal baptismal vows on the day of St. Volodymyr in 2006 was introduced in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church by the then UGCC Primate, emeritus Archbishop, His Beatitude Lubomyr. Since then, every year in all the churches in Ukraine and around the world the faithful renew their baptismal vows after the liturgy.
