During the collection of funds for Ukraine, announced by Pope Francis on April 24 this year, the Italian dioceses collected a total of 1.230.000,00 euros. This was reported by the National Communications Division of the Conference of Bishops of Italy, stressing that “the collected funds that have been already transferred to the State Secretariat (of the Vatican) express closeness and solidarity of the Church with the dramatic situation, of which the Pontiff has repeatedly spoken.”

From the onset of war in Donbas, the country’s eastern region, by estimates there have been at least 9,000 casualties, including 2,500 killed civilians, and 21,000 injured people. Currently the biggest problem is a trap in which thousands of people in the conflict area found themselves. It is mostly children and the elderly, who are virtually deprived of the possibility to leave the area.

On April 3 this year, announcing the collection of donations for the benefit of Ukraine, Pope Francis said: “I think the tragedy of those who suffer from the consequences of hatred in Ukraine. Those who remained in the affected military operations that led to thousands of victims. I think also of those who had to leave their land because of the difficult situation that will continue, and there is more than a million of such people. The children and the elderly are suffering the most in this conflict. I always think of all these people, pray for them, and I felt the need to contribute to humanitarian support in their favor.” Hence the call supplement the donations with your generous contribution.
